NETT Gains: Understanging the Risks and Benefits of Lung Volume Reduction Surgery
Andrew Ries, MD, MPH, University of California, San Diego
Christine Garvey, RN, FNP, MPA, MSN, AE-C, University of California, San Francisco
Nearly 3 million people in the United States are living with emphysema. Thanks to a landmark study, the National Emphysema Treatment Trial (NETT), researchers have developed a better understanding of how and when lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) should be used to treat this debilitating disease. Dr. Andy Reis will share the results of the NETT study - which identified characteristics to predict the outcome of LVRS for individual patients - and explain how the process has impacted Medicare coverage policy and the use of pulmonary rehabilitation in treating the disease. Chris Garvey will focus on the "real world" application of this research, using examples from her clinical practice.
