TAKING CONTROL OF ASTHMA: A COMMUNITY EFFORT
Asthma Conference Goals:
- Provide healthcare professionals and caregivers a localized view of asthma in the Inland Empire.
- Provide current information on the treatment of asthma, particularly young children.
- Learn more about the Breathmobiles that will be treating children with asthma in the Inland Empire.
- Update healthcare professionals on current guidelines for the treatment of asthma, provide necessary tools to help improve patient education, and gain a better understanding of multi-cultural issues impacting patient care.
- Provide school-nurses with best practices on dealing with asthma at the school site.

o describe the reasons for prescribing inhaled steroids in children with asthma

o describe methods to reduce the risks of side effects from inhaled steroids

Asthma Treatment 2007: The Emphasis is on Control
This session will provide attendees information on the newly released guidelines on the treatment of asthma and how this will impact treating asthmatics.
Who should attend this session: All attendees, particularly physicians and physician assistants who treat children with asthma.

· Asthma Devices 101, Karen O'Cull, RT
Attendees will learn the importance of properly teaching patients how to use the different devices that dispense asthma medications and asthma managements devices.
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
o instruct patients on how to correctly use MDI's and DPI's.
o understand the importance of using a spacer with MDI's.
o instruct patients on the use and care of the nebulizer.
o demonstrate to patients how to use a peak flow meter and the importance of using this as an asthma management tool.

2:35 pm to 5:00 pm Physicians Asthma Care Education (PACE) (for Physicians and PA's only) Sunil Saini, MD and Speaker TBA
The PACE program is a multifaceted seminar to improve physician awareness, attitudes, ability and application of communication and therapeutic skills for asthma. It is collaborative project of the University of Michigan Schools of Public Health and Medicine and has been evaluated and proven effective in improving long-term patient asthma outcomes. We encourage you to bring questions and cases that have been problematic to share with the group.
At the end of the session, participants will:
o attain increased skills to educate and counsel families on asthma management.
o improve their therapeutic skills in treating childhood outcomes.
o have increase knowledge to help improve asthma patient outcomes
o improve their communication skills
o have an outline the various components of cultural diversities
Who should attend this session: Physicians and Physician Assistants who treat patients with asthma. It is strongly encouraged that you bring your Medical Assistants and other office staff to attend this conference, particularly the MA training.
